Based primarily in Tokyo and the Czech Republic, Seiko Hihara’s practice draws on historical and ethnographic perspectives, as well as collaborative research with others. Working with thread, textiles, language, and moving images, the work reflects on invisible voices and forms of labor, as well as memories embedded in objects. By borrowing and receiving objects from others as part of the process, the practice attempts to weave traces of others into each work.
Recent research focuses on the histories and cultural practices surrounding textiles, examining overlooked labor within handicraft and the textile industry, as well as the collectivity inherent in the materials themselves. Hihara considers collectivity a practice involving empathy: encountering the experiences and suffering of others through objects and actions, and attempting to take on that suffering. With the idea that fabric sewn with others can embody such collectivity, the practice uses fabric and thread while exploring how traces of others and their relationships can emerge within the exhibition space.
Collaborative research with friends in the Czech Republic and Croatia examines the wartime experiences of their grandparents. Informed by nearly eight years of living in the Czech Republic, the practice explores the interconnected modern histories linking Japan and the Czech Republic, the Czech Republic and Vietnam, and Japan and Vietnam, alongside overlapping histories and memories shaped by the movement of people.
